Amino acids are the only nutrients that contain the essential nitrogen element. Carbohydrate and fats do not contain nitrogen. Nitrogen is an essential element for maintaining and increasing lean muscle mass. In order for an anabolic (building) state to occur intra-muscular nitrogen balance must be positive. Athletes who do not ingest enough quality protein in their diet, and/or train at high altitudes may be susceptible to protein malnutrition. Low protein ingestion can create a situation of slow tissue growth and/or recovery from training.
